Interview: Get familiar with Steve Robinson (UK)

We sit down with Steve Robinson (UK) for the first instalment of our ‘Get Familiar’ Series as we shotgun some questions his way to get a peak into how inspirations, introduction to the culture and his start in the music world!

Q1. When and where did you find house music?

A1. I would’ve been about 14 in Liverpool, UK in 2001 listening to the Essential Mix on Radio 1. I have 100’s of tapes from setting my alarm and recording it at 2-4am, the love for it has remained with me since then

Q2. What DJ made you want to be who you are today?

A2. I’ve always loved DJ’s like Jeff Mills, Carl Cox, Ben Sims etc. playing across three decks, and I also remember a famous video of Terrance Parker at Fuse on YouTube doing some crazy stuff with house music. There is a lot but the one that sticks out is Yousef, I’d see him play all the time in the early days of Circus in Liverpool, which was my first introduction to club nights. At the time he was playing proper Jackin’ across 3 decks, and will never forget those nights

Q3. When was your first dj set under this moniker?

A3. Probably aged 13 at an under 18’s event, I remember playing techno with my mate Liam from the likes of Dave Clarke, Marco Bailey, Marco Carola etc. I even took a Cycloops sampler along to do some creative looping – really wasn’t the crowd for it!House wise would be in Liverpool around 2006, there was a Jackin’ house night called Souljackin’ that I remember playing at, it was great

Q4. What is your go to piece of kit?

A4. Production wise my Sennheiser HD650 headphones are an absolute go-to, pretty much all my mix-downs are done using them. I don’t really use much outboard gear, Ableton Push is my go-to for programming, and a small selection of plugins, I try and avoid the whole plugin rabbit hole as much as possible!. Tip – Devious Machines ‘Duck’ is an amazing time saver for sidechaining

Q5. Wish List – What do you wish you owned that you don’t have today?

A5. I’d love the obvious, an original 909. One day I will get a pair of 1210’s, they were always a dream as a kid to have a pair!
