Interview: Get familiar with Joey Coco

We sit down with Joey Coco for the first instalment of our ‘Get Familiar’ Series as we shotgun some questions his way to get a peak into how inspirations, introduction to the culture and his start in the music world!

Q1. When and where did you find house music?

A1. As a kid, some older family/cousin playing E-Man & Jon Cutler – It’s Yours. Changed my world! Still my favourite house track to this day.

Q2. What DJ made you want to be who you are today?

A2. Can’t pinpoint just one. I’ve seen some fantastic DJs whose style and set selection I’m inspired by like Robert Hood, Ben UFO, The Martinez Brothers, Boogs, Cinthie etc. I’m happy jus being my and DJing like me :).

Q3. When was your first dj set under this moniker?

A3. Oooooh I think 2016? At Boney in Melbourne! Some loose times at that place!

Q4. What is your go to piece of kit?

A4. Honestly speaking. I don’t use a whole lot of outboard stuff. I have a Nord which i use sparingly ( so sparingly my friend has it in his possession for over a year.) I try push myself and make the best with what I got. Logic plug-ins have been my best friend for a long time (10+ years) So i guess Ultrabeat? haha

Q5. Wish List – What do you wish you owned that you don’t have today?

A5. I think a staple is definitely a Juno or a Moog, so let’s start with the staples first. Wouldn’t mind an MPC, but that’d honestly be for aesthetic and fun. If we’re talking for real function and practicality – I would love a customer DJ table/cabinet, chippy’s hit me up!
